Resistance

The people were sullen. They seemed beaten. And yet....

Bridges across the River were broken down as soon as built. Cargo barges sprang leaks and sank mid-stream. Arrows from the shadows had Mordor's soldiers pitching dead into their dinners. The food itself could not be trusted, fouled with untasteable poisons even orc-stomachs could not countenance.

Reprisals were savage, and yet a thousand dead Gondorians—and a thousand more, and a thousand more—did not end the attacks. Mordor had soldiers and to spare, true enough, but soon the armies seethed....

Perhaps, the Witch-King reflected, some frontiers are too distant and too great.
