Do we walk in legends?

Éomer, glancing at the headman pacing beside Théoden's horse, could not help but remember childhood tales.

The scent of horse sweat, saddle-soap and fire-smoke always reminded him of evenings in the great hall at Aldburg, when the Chief Marshal told tales. Of Woses, who caught children straying too deep into the wild woods – and ate them. Or whose poisoned darts transformed hunters into beasts that returned to savage their own homes and families – and on being killed, turned back to men.

Yet had Aragorn not taught him that legends might spring from the green earth – and be otherwise than told.

I like the way you show how Aragorn has broadened Eomer's horizons. So very true, we have to know what people are like before jumping to conclusions.

Thanks. I do love the way Eomer grows into kingship and wisdom in the books, and I think his contact with Aragorn (and Legolas, Gimli and the Hobbits - I just love his exchanges with Gimli!) is a large part of that.
