Day 118: Don't judge a book by its cover

[livejournal.com profile] rakshathedemon asked for the first meeting of Elrond and Gandalf.

This is another drabble in my Elrond series.

as part of the Mighty among both Elves and Men series

Day 118

Don't judge a book by its cover

At the approach of the traveller, Elrond wondered briefly why Círdan had committed the Red Ring to this last of those from over the sea. Whereas Curunír had sought to impress and impose his will on others with voice and bearing, Mithrandir cloaked himself in the body of a weary old man: a little stooped, frail, weathered.

Yet. Elrond saw, the spirit that looked out from under those bushy brows was fierce and strong like an eagle, steady on its course as the stars, bright as the Flame Imperishable.

Elrond smiled ruefully to himself: Círdan had, as always, chosen wisely.

Ah, another Elrond one! He is such a fascinating character, and you portray him so well.

I like the way this reflects so well on Elrond, Mithrandir, *and* Círdan, all characters that I really like and I think Tolkien really respects!

Well done, Liz! {{{hugs}}}

And, of course, I re-read this drabble and see what I didn't before: echoes of blessings from both Manwë and Varda.... beautifully done, Liz!

Oh, excellent!

Whereas Curunír had sought to impress and impose his will on others with voice and bearing...

That would have made him iffy for me right there... (Speaking from the benefit of hindsight, of course.)

Loved the description of Gandalf's spirit and Cirdan's wisdom, with their implicit references. You do a wonderful job of quietly building layers within your drabbles.

Excellent and very Tolkienish! Love the reference to Cirdan, who is part of the lives of both Elrond and Gandalf. And the contrast to Saruman is very apt.
