Random Tolkien drabble - Eavesdropping (Smaug)

Inspired by a conversation with [personal profile] elena_tiriel about what attracted Smaug to Erebor.

Eavesdropping

Smaug glides across the night sky, invisible against the clouds. Words drift up from around the pinprick of a campfire far below.

"—done well for themselves."

"Aye. Rich veins and deep and wide. And easy trade: the Men are friendlier than here in the east."

"They say children uses rubies for marbles and have skipping ropes twisted from gold...."

A laugh. "Not quite, lad. But you'll see soon enough. And the Arkenstone... aye, that is a wonder."

Smaug lets the wind carry him away. So the crebain spoke true! Now this unwary band will lead him to the fabled hoard....
