falcon_horus is holding a Kate Heightmeyer Drabble-a-thon and I've committed to writing a drabble a day until the deadline on 28 February.

Day 1: prompt: dancing barefoot

Three Graces

Butterflies fluttered amongst the swaying grasses and nodding bellflowers. Kate curled her bare toes against the warmed earth, and reached for another strawberry from the picnic spread before them. Elizabeth laughed at something Teyla had said.

Kate, feeling the sweetness of the berry burst against her tongue, watched the butterflies enviously. So brief, so bright: they seized the day, for this was their only day.

Rising, she spread her arms and lifted her face to the sun. Eyes closed, she began to sway.

“Kate?”

She smiled down at the others' surprise, and reached out her hands. "Come. Dance with me!"
