A friend of mine was interested in seeing a crossover drabble, so I did some research and came up with this.

prompt: Kate/Fleur, stars

Not in the stars but in ourselves

"I always had this thing about the stars. Like they belonged to me and no one else...."

Kate blushed, but Teyla's inquiring look invited her to go on.

"My grandmother – my mum's mum – used to tell me stories about how my great-great-great-... oh I don't know how many greats... grandmother studied the stars. It was really unusual back then for even an aristocratic woman to be so educated. She kept a journal. It's in a museum now. I always thought she must have had such spirit, and been very clever, and when I was little, I wanted to be her...."

prompt: Kate & John, effusiveness

Unlocked

Effusiveness wasn't a word Kate associated with Major Sheppard. Evasive was more like it. She knew he appreciated what she did for the military personnel he sent her way, but he kept conversations with her brisk and businesslike. The merest hint that maybe he should come talk to her himself had him backpedaling like a dozen Wraith were advancing on him.

Until she made a passing comment that normally on New Year's Day she'd be watching the Rose Bowl on TV, and suddenly there was no stopping him. Kate smiled and let him babble on, because it was a start....

prompt: Kate/Ronon, comfort

(Dis)Comfort

Kate looked up from making notes as the door to her office slid open. "Ronon?" She shot to her feet, sending several sheets of paper wafting to the floor.

"Didn't mean to startle you." The Satedan ambled into the room, one hand hidden behind his back.

"Did you... was there... is there something I can do for you?" Kate blushed as she stuttered out the question.

"Nope. But maybe something I can do for you." With a flourish, Ronon produced the plate of cookies he'd been hiding. "Thought you might need them after listening to McKay whining for an hour."

prompt: Kate/Chuck(nician), geeky

Scintillating

"...way light bends, so if the atmosphere the light's traveled through to reach you is slightly different, you get a slightly different image. And the atmosphere isn't uniform, and it's constantly moving as well, which means the composition of the atmosphere between you and the star is always changing. So the image you see is always changing, which is why...." Chuck's voice trailed off as he caught Kate's amused smile. "...stars twinkle. You just wanted to look at them, didn't you?"

"Not just at them." Kate stepped closer, her smile turning mischievous. "I like a man who knows his stuff...."

[Note: huge credit to the Astronomy Picture of the Day site for a lovely clear explanation of Why stars twinkle for me to crib from.]

prompt: Kate/Elizabeth, Ascension

A Higher Plane of Existence

"Would you want to?" The late afternoon sun striping the room was making Elizabeth sleepy.

"Ascend?" Kate lifted her head and met Elizabeth's inquiring gaze

"Yes."

Kate considered the question, a faint frown creasing her forehead. "Does it mean leaving behind the flesh."

"That's the idea."

Kate's lips twitched. "In that case...," she traced a fingertip lightly down Elizabeth's arm, "I don't think I'm ready for it just yet."

Elizabeth slid her hand around the back of Kate's neck, gently tangling her fingers in the other woman's hair, and drew her closer. "Me neither," she murmured, her lips against Kate's.

prompt: Kate/John, darkness

Fused

Kate always felt she should've thanked Rodney, except it would have been embarrassing to explain just how grateful she was he'd blown the power out right when she and Colonel Sheppard were discussing crew evaluations.

He'd stopped by her office a few times. More than a few. She was no expert on body language, but a lot was being said without words. Yet somehow they couldn't quite shift the actual conversation off the professional.

Until the lights went out, and they blundered towards each other in the sudden darkness, and John's lips told hers what she'd been aching to know.

prompt: Kate & Teyla, chocolate eggs

Hidden Treasure

"It is very pretty," Teyla held up the elaborately-fashioned box and turned it around, "but what is it?"

"It's an Easter egg."

"Easter?"

"It's this holiday we have. Kinda like Christmas, except it commemorates Jesus's resurrection rather than his birth."

"Resurrection?" Teyla was still examining the package. "This Jesus had an eventful life."

Kate smiled. "That he did. The egg's really more of an ancient symbol of spring and rebirth rather than anything to do with Jesus." She coughed gently. "Uh... there's chocolate inside the foil."

"Why did you not say so before?" Teyla eagerly began to unwrap the package.

prompt: waiting

Courage Of Another Kind

The waiting was the worst part. Staying behind while the team was off world, not knowing what was happening to them, when they'd return... if they'd return. So much had happened to them, so many surprises here in Pegasus, that even the most innocuous meet-and-greet could send her imagination into overdrive.

Hearing about it afterwards, when she lay close to another beating heart, feeling warm breath on her face, was not so bad. No matter what scrapes the team had got into, or what new woe they'd set in chain for Atlantis, they'd returned.

No, the waiting was the worst.

prompt: sunlight

Set post-Doppelganger

Eulogy

She brought sunlight.

Sometimes like the first touch of dawn after a long dark night: a word, a gesture, her endless quiet patience with those who had seen too much and done too much.

At other times, she lit the city with the slanting beams of a summer afternoon: laughter, smiles, her joy at life and living and loving and friendship.

In private, she burned with the fierceness of noon, giving and receiving pleasure without restraint or reserve.

Harsh duty might cloud her, but still she gave light for others to work by

She is gone; now comes the night.

prompt: Kate/John; books

Romantic Lead

"War and Peace?" Kate picked up the heavy volume lurking on John's nightstand and blew dust off it.

"Kinda got stuck around page fifty," he admitted.

Kate laughed. "Better than me. I only got as far as...," she riffled through the book, "... page thirty eight. And it was a class assignment. Thank God for CliffsNotes ." She put the book down. "So, why d'you bring it?"

"It was long." He grinned. "What did you bring?"

"Pride and Prejudice. Thought I'd be consoling myself on lonely nights with Mr Darcy." She sashayed over to John. "Haven't opened it since I got here...."

I'm not doing very well with the -a-day part of the Kate drabble-a-thon (maybe I should have just numbered them rather than mentioning 'days' *g*) but I'm going to post what I've written and try and catch up....

prompt: Kate/John, storm

Sparring Partners

"You did what?" John glared at Kate.

"I was fine."

"She might have hurt you!"

"Don't be silly! Teyla wouldn't–"

"She's hurt me often enough." John unconsciously rubbed his elbow.

Kate's lips twitched, but she managed not to laugh. Injured male pride? Or jealousy? "Teyla was just showing me some moves. It was more like Tai Chi." She stepped closer, resting her hands on his chest. "What's really eating you?"

He drew her against him. "I just...." He shrugged. "You're part of my life that has nothing to do with... war. Fighting. Guess I want to keep it like that...."

prompt: Kate & Teyla; chick flicks

A Matter Of Taste

"Ronon and I have watched several Earth movies with Colonel Sheppard and Doctor McKay." Teyla sounded like she'd been less than enthralled by the experience.

Kate rolled her eyes. "Don't tell me. Explosions? Fights? Lots of gore?"

Teyla nodded. "When I asked if all Earth movies were like this, he said something uncomplimentary about... chick flicks, I believe he called them."

Kate grimaced. "Yeah, well, maybe he has a point. Some of those are just... bad. But there's plenty of good stuff." She grinned. "Let's go see what's in Atlantis's DVD library – there must be a few classics in there."

prompt: honor

For Auld Lang Syne

Kate made it her business to perform one kind act every day that the recipient didn't expect.

An invitation to a lost-looking new arrival to Atlantis to sit with her at dinner; or taking an interest in someone's hobby, family or (far too often!) pet theory; or a publicly spoken word of praise for a thankless task.

It was something Carson had managed to do every day, just by being who he was. And now he was gone. So Kate honored his memory by trying to spark something of the bright flame that had, all too soon, been snuffed out.

prompt: words are swords, wield them carefully

Self-Inflicted Wounds

Kate stepped out onto the hospital roof and walked across to the parapet. The icy wind whipped her hair back from her face. She didn't smoke but, right now, a cigarette seemed like a really good idea. Or maybe a gun. Not that she was suicidal, but knowing she'd never again be able to inflict that level of pain on a patient with one misplaced word would be a good thing.

"Hey, thought I might find you up here." Doctor Paige, her supervisor, appeared at her shoulder. "You just have to remember how many patient you've made things better for...."

prompt: Kate & John; Elizabeth

Lost In Space

"Keep thinking about a conversation I had with Elizabeth the first day we got here."

Kate kept quiet. John had been prowling around her office ever since he'd arrived on the pretext of discussing crew evaluations. At last what was really on his mind was coming out.

"I told her: You don't leave people in the hands of the enemy."

Abruptly, he sat down. "I shouldn't have...." He scrubbed a hand across his face. "And I keep forgetting. Keep.... Only reason I haven't mounted a rescue mission is I couldn't face the chewing out I'd get for risking more lives...."
tanaquiljall: (Kate)
prompt: Kate/Ronon; tough

Tough Guy

"You know, if I was seeing you professionally, I'd be concerned about how often you get hurt." Kate examined the suture strips closing the most recent cut on Ronon's forehead.

With a growl, he batted her hand away. "I'm OK. Just didn't duck fast enough when Sheppard swung."

Kate sat back on her heels and smiled at him. "Well, lucky for you, I'm not seeing you professionally." She prodded him in the chest with a finger. "I just hope you haven't got a headache."

With another growl, Ronon seized her and turned her on her back. "When you're around? Never!"

prompt: Kate & Elizabeth; past lives

Famous

"Have you used hypnosis much before?" Elizabeth had wondered ever since Kate put Teyla under, but with so much happening right after, there hadn't been a chance to explore the topic more with Atlantis's psychologist.

Kate stirred the granola in her bowl and shrugged. "Not really. I took a course on using it to treat addictions once, but the prof was kinda... kooky." When Elizabeth raised an enquriing eyebrow, she added, "She was really into past-life regression."

"You don't believe in the possibility of reincarnation?"

Kate laughed. "I don't believe we were all of us once Cleopatra or Abraham Lincoln."

prompt: who heals the healer?

The Cure For What Ails You

Kate had been staring off into space, her mind drifting as she tried to summon the energy to write up the casenotes for her last patient. The knock at the door snapped her from her reverie.

"How are you holding up, lass?" Carson put two mugs down on her desk, unscrewed the flask that had been tucked under his arm, and poured out two cups of steaming hot chocolate.

Kate managed a wan smile. "Surviving." She picked up the nearest mug and sipped at it. "All the better for this."

Carson laughed. "I wish all my treatments were as effective."
