So I'm finally kicking of my month-long Tolkien daily drabble fest.

I was very sad when I realized I hadn't written any Tolkien drabbles in the past year (even if I did write a surprising number of longer stories!), so I decided to have another prompt-challenge for a month, to kick my muses into gear. I was originally hoping to do this last month, but last month was waaaay too busy. So June it is!

Day 1: Jurisdiction )

Title: Good Intentions
Fandom: Tolkien
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Bad drug trip
Words: 1450
Summary: Not for the first time, Aragorn wishes he could exchange a tedious council in Minas Tirith for the Prancing Pony. Until the council takes a decidedly unexpected turn. Written for the [livejournal.com profile] cliche_bingo prompt "Drugs".

Aragorn pinched the bridge of his nose in an attempt to head off a looming headache. )

Day 363

Night Raid

Faramir wormed through the reeds on his stomach until he reached the edge of the river. Cautiously, he parted the fronds before his face and peered at the enemy on the far bank, visible under the faint starlight as ghostly shades against the darker trees.

He glanced to the side, alerted by a change in the way the rushes whispered. Readying his bow, he hooted three times like an owl, and rose to let fly a cascade of arrows in company with his fellows.

Before the orcs had recovered from their confusion, the Rangers had melted away into the night.

And today's drabble. This was also prompted by a suggestion from [livejournal.com profile] elena_tiriel regarding the snarkiness in the discussion of athelas in the Houses of Healing, together with my own thoughts about the way athelas is often (ab)used in fanfic.

Day 357

as part of the Baker's Dozen series.

Quackery

Faramir handed over a crudely block-printed sheet. "This was being distributed around the market in Emyn Arnen, sire."

Aragorn glanced at it, and then took a second look. His frown deepened as he read on through the mass of fancy lettering.

Neston the apothecary!
Only purveyor of Lossarnach athelas remedies!
Including:
Athelas tea, good for all maladies of the stomach.
Athelas lotion, sovereign remedy against skin blemishes.
Athelas balm, soothes bruises and sprains.
Athelas drops, revive tired eyes.
Genuine athelas, as used by the King!

"I’ve apprehended this Neston and confiscated his stock, but perhaps we should revisit the statutes...?"

[livejournal.com profile] dkpalaska commented after Sparring Partners: It's not necessarily a prompt *g*, but I'd also like to know how you see this continuing and ending.

Day 355

as part of the Handy With A Sword series.

Submission

"I yield." Faramir held up his hands in surrender, and allowed Éowyn to help him to his feet. Once there, he rubbed his shoulder, grimacing. "Did you try that trick on your brother?"

"Sometimes. After he taught me." Éowyn stripped off her gauntlets and touched Faramir’s face. "You are not hurt, I hope?"

"Only a little." He caught her round the waist. "My pride is more bruised than my shoulder."

"A rematch?"

"Once we are wed, perhaps: more bruises in a bridegroom would be unseemly." He drew her closer. "But I will claim a kiss as weregeld for my injuries!"

tanaquiljall: (Drabble RDA)
A follow up to yesterday's The Hand of History. Because, really, [livejournal.com profile] rakshathedemon shouldn't be allowed to post lists like this that get my muse all antsy....

Day 351

Favours

"Forgive me! I fear I have overstepped the mark." A troubled look marred Glorfindel’s fair Elven features.

"Nay," Faramir reassured him. "’Tis simply that when you spoke of a favour, I did not expect this."

"I heard Lord Boromir laud your prowess more than once while he guested in Imladris," the other explained.

Faramir smiled ruefully. "He flattered me, I think. There are others more skilled than I who would better suit your purpose. If you wish, I will arrange it."

"That would be a kindness. Yet I hope I may still hear you sing one of the Rangers’ songs."

(You don't know how tempted I was by the Toasted Marshmallows...!)

tanaquiljall: (Drabble RDA)
[livejournal.com profile] rakshathedemon asked for Faramir meets Galadriel, or Glorfindel.

Day 350

as part of the An Elf-lord Revealed series.

The Hand Of History

Faramir stepped outside into the cooler night air to catch his breath at last after a long day of celebrating the King’s wedding. As he gazed up at the stars, he reflected that ever since Elessar had called him home, he had felt caught up in a story or legend. And now he had dined with the brother of Elros, first king of Númenor....

"May I join you?" Almost noiseless footfalls at his side.

"Of course, Lord Glorfindel." Faramir bowed. And here was one whose fate was twined with the last of Anárion’s line. Would it be unmannerly to ask...?

tanaquiljall: (Drabble RDA)
A follow up to Exercised. [livejournal.com profile] dkpalaska said Can we see them spar? Who's going to win? *g*

Day 348

as part of the Handy With A Sword series.

Sparring Partners

A few swings of the practice foils to get their measure, and then they squared off.

Faramir lunged tentatively and Éowyn parried, letting his blade slide over hers. Unbalanced, he lurched forwards. She sidestepped and applied the flat of her blade to his backside.

A ripple of laughter from the watching crowd. Faramir smiled ruefully and turned to face Éowyn again. This time, his attack was more serious, her defence more dogged: retreating and circling as she patiently waited for an opening. Finally, stepping inside his guard, she hooked one foot around his ankle... and laid him on his back.

tanaquiljall: (Drabble RDA)
[livejournal.com profile] rakshathedemon asked for Erotica/romance between Faramir and Eowyn (yes, it's been done before, but there can always be more).

Day 347

Lighting The Fire

He steals into the dim-lit room on stockinged feet and, huddled before the banked fire, tries silently to shed belt, tunic, undershirt....

"Faramir?"

He turns at the sleepy voice. "I hoped not to wake you, love."

"I did not expect you," she yawns, "tonight."

"My ship docked at the Harlond an hour since."

She slips from the bed to join him, touches his arm."You are frozen!" She bends and rouses the fire, her slender figure outlined against the leaping light.

Faramir, feeling a sudden heat, slips an arm around Éowyn’s waist and draws her, shivering, against him. "Warm me?"

tanaquiljall: (Drabble RDA)
A follow-up to A Journal of Record, after [livejournal.com profile] dkpalaska left a comment that I'm not quite sure I agree that Faramir the scholar would be so blithe about known historical inaccuracies. Do you think he would at least have the "other perspective" written down? For really, the so-called inaccuracies are not always "untruths", but often merely the product of different perspectives and worldviews.

(Which was exactly the point I was trying to get across - that the Hobbits' account wasn't "wrong", but perhaps misunderstood or misrepresented certain things because they were Hobbits and not Men.)

Photobucket as part of the series As seen by the Little People.

Day 342

The truth shall make you free

Faramir stared at the blank parchment in irritation. He felt as slow-witted as that schoolboy long ago struggling to write an essay on the causes of the Kin-strife. Yet how to speak of events that he could scarcely be said to have witnessed, even though he had been present, and which still caused him pain after more than half a century?

Begin with what he did see. Pippin had told his tale with an imperfect knowledge of Men and the Lords of Men, and understandable anger. Faramir would give an account tempered by greater familiarity, and love – and hard-won forgiveness.

tanaquiljall: (Drabble RDA)
As I'm planning to observe the Content Strike tomorrow, I'm posting tomorrow's drabble a little early.

Also, I've started doing something about moving away from LJ. I've been uncomfortable with how LJ is being run ever since Strikethrough, and every incident since has made me less happy about being here. I'll admit nearing the end of posting my year of daily drabbles makes it easier to move after this kerfuffle, although my other big reason for not moving - which is the great community of people posting here - hasn't gone away. Still thinking about how best to deal with that. Anyway, I now have an Insane Journal account where I've transferred all but the last couple of posts from this LJ and my SGA one. Feel free to friend me over there and I'll friend you back. *g*

And on to the drabble. In honour of the work [livejournal.com profile] allie_meril has done in promoting the strike and helping keep me informed about other developments with LJ, I chose one of her prompts: How about something on those three Ruling Queens of Numenor? Too bad the three queens were all famed for their bad qualities: Ancalime was too proud (I think), Telperien was a harsh queen who refused to marry or something like that, and Vanimelde was a silly twit who loved music and dancing better than ruling. Also another nod to [livejournal.com profile] rakshathedemon's request for Faramir interacting with a daughter or grand-daughter.

Day 340

A Question of Character

"Father?"

"Yes, Silmarien?" Faramir, glancing up from his book, noted the frown on his daughter’s face as she perused hers.

"Did you marry Mother because you thought all Númenórean ladies silly?"

Stunned, he stuttered, "I–. No. Of course not. But why–?"

Silmarien tipped her book up. "The Ruling Queens of Númenor were very silly. Horrible to their husbands, or refusing to marry, or thinking of nothing but pleasure. You would not have wanted to marry someone like that."

"Quite." Faramir smiled. "Although I knew several sensible and kind Gondorian ladies I might have married. But your mother... she was special."
tanaquiljall: (Drabble RDA)
[livejournal.com profile] rakshathedemon asked for Elderly Pippin and Faramir in Minas Tirith before Pippin's death....

Day 339

A little piece of The Shire

"Come on out!" Pippin waved Faramir onto the little sun-warmed terrace where he was transplanting this year’s geranium cuttings into troughs.

Faramir breathed in the comforting scents of damp earth and leaves as he took one of the larger seats set out by a low table. "Your garden looks wonderful – as always!"

Pippin, gathering empty pots, inclined his head in thanks. "’Tis nothing to your gardens across the river – but quite enough for me to potter round in and keep me busy. But enough flower-talk! How is Éowyn? And have they settled on a name yet for your latest grandson?"

tanaquiljall: (Drabble RDA)
Fluff. Because sometimes fluff is good. *g*

Day 338

as part of the Handy With A Sword series.

Exercised

The air was still chilly when Faramir stepped outside. He followed a splurge of noise to a water-meadow stretching between the pavilions and the river, where knights of Rohan and lords of Gondor, come to attend his wedding, were sparring good-naturedly.

His uncle and soon-to-be-brother stood watching the matches with a critical eye.

"Seeking a bout, nephew?"

"Aye, if any will partner me."

From behind him, a familiar voice challenged, "I will spar with you, lord."

Éomer laughed at Faramir’s surprise. "If you have not already had the honour, Prince, I can assure you my sister is a formidable opponent."
