[livejournal.com profile] elena_tiriel seems to be on a bit of a roll with the "compare and contrast" prompts. She asked me to look at the fact that Frodo was adopted by his uncle, and Éomer and Éowyn were adopted by their uncle.

Day 322

Adoptive

Frodo did well enough in the rough-and-tumble of Brandy Hall, but Bilbo saw his eager look when he visited Bag End. It would be a kindness to the lad to adopt him.

Of course, it would be a kindness to Bilbo, too, to have someone to share his passions with.

***

Éomer and Éowyn did well enough in Aldburg, but Théoden saw his nephew’s struggles to be master ere time. It would be a kindness to bring them to Edoras.

Of course, it would be a kindness to Théoden, too, to have children other than his only son to dote upon.

Some days crack!fic plotbunnies come along and attach themselves firmly to your ankles, despite your best attempts to stomp on them. This was one of those days....

Day 311

Translations from the Elvish

Elrond was both amused and charmed when Bilbo begged to make use of Rivendell’s library.

Then first Lindir and later Erestor and others of his household complained. Elrond went to see for himself.

In the library, he found Bilbo tottering between shelves with piles of books.

"My dear Bilbo! What– ?"

"Putting your books in the proper order! I don’t know why tales of the sons of Fëanor were mixed up with histories of the Edain arriving in Númenor...."

Elrond looked at Bilbo’s determined face and almost retreated from the challenge of reversing the chaos being wrought on knowledge and order.

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] aranel_took's Letter meme:

Day 299

Learning His Letters

"Mr Baggins, sir?"

"What is it, Sam?" Bilbo turned away from his desk, where he had been writing in a large book bound in red leather.

"Please, sir, da sent me to tell you as there ain’t no tomatoes today, but the first o’ the beans is ready for pickin’."

"I’m glad to hear it." Noticing Sam’s wide-eyed gaze was fixed on the scatter of manuscripts, inks, pens and other paraphernalia covering the desk, Bilbo pulled a scrap of paper towards him and waved Sam forward. "Come here, lad. Now this," he drew a flourish, "is an S for Sam...."

Because today is a day for birthday drabbles.... *g*

Day 166

A question of birthdays

Pippin, escaping Pearl's clutches, wove amongst the guests, determined not to be deflected from his goal.

Reaching Uncle Bilbo, he tugged at his sleeve. The old Hobbit turned from talking to Rory Brandybuck and smiled down at his second cousin once removed.

"What is it, lad?"

Pippin frowned in concentration, making sure he got his question right. "Do birthdays get... less exciting as you have more of them?"

Bilbo chuckled. "Not at all, my boy. Why, as you grow older, you get more of the best part of any birthday – you have more nephews and nieces to share it with!"

[livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 asked for some of Estel's life growing up in Rivendell, but not featuring Elrond, the twins, Glorfindel, or any of the usual suspects.

Day 163

The Long and the Short of it

The tall man bowed low. "At yours and your family's! But we have met before, Mr Baggins."

Bilbo frowned. "Forgive me, good sir, but I am sure I would remember such a great tall Man as yourself."

"Indeed!" The man laughed. "But I was scarcely taller than you on your first visit to the Last Homely House."

Racking his brains, Bilbo recalled a gawky Man-child among the Elves. "You asked impertinent questions about my feet!"

"Forgive me!" The man bowed again. "You were the first Hobbit I met. I have travelled far since and hope to have learned better manners."

[livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 asked for people dealing with big changes: Sam having Frodo rather than Bilbo as his master.

Day 116

Changes

Young Mr Frodo, 'e's not so chatty as Old Mr Bilbo used ter be. Truth be told, there was times you couldn't hardly get the work done for Old Mr Bilbo follerin' you around askin' 'bout the nasturtians or lilies or taters. Or tellin' you 'bout some Elven-maid slender an' fair as a snowdrop, or some Elf-lord, tall an' strong as an ash tree.

Young Mr Frodo, mostly 'e jus' smiles and says "I'm sure you know best, Sam. Grow what you want." An' then 'e'll look at the roses or snapdragons and begin, "Do you remember Bilbo's story about...?"

[livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 gave me the prompt: People dealing with big changes - Frodo becoming Master of Bag End.

Day 109

Absent Presence

The ninety-nine days' wonder had at last begun to die down, but Frodo still caught himself listening for the clatter of Bilbo replacing his walking stick on coming in from a long tramp through the Country Round, or the rattle of dishes in the kitchen as his uncle fixed a tween-meal bite to eat, or the quiet tattoo as Bilbo leaned forward and knocked the dottle out of his pipe on the fender.

More and more often, Frodo would invite his cousins to stay: their merry company staved off the unprecedented and unnerving silence that otherwise descended of an evening.

[livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 asked for a Sindarin mistranslation of Bilbo's that leads to great hilarity among the Rivendell Elves.

Day 14

Lost in Translation

Bilbo finally faltered in his recitation when the smiles and whispers among his audience grew to the point where he could no longer ignore them.

He glared at the assembled Elves and said stiffly. "My good Elves, please do share the joke. If I am to provide such hilarity, I would know the cause, that I may oblige you in future."

Lindir stepped forward and bowed. "Your pardon, Bilbo. It's just...," he hesitated, "Lúthien's stinking hair?"

Bilbo drew himself up to his full height. "That is what the Lay says...."

"I think," Lindir answered gently, "you'll find it's flowing hair...."

Note: In The Lost Road and Other Writings, HoME Vol 5, Part 3, The Etymologies, ûl is translated as odour and ulu- as pour or flow.... Perhaps a slightly inexperienced scholar might muddle them. *g*

Day 2

[livejournal.com profile] telperion1 asked for something Hobbit-centric. Specifically about the resettling of Dale/Laketown/Erebor after the big battle. Maybe the first impression of an OC returning to the area?

Renewal

The mountain's high-reared cone still towered, barren and stony. But waves of sage and orange and purple now broke against its middle slopes. Its feet were covered with a patchwork quilt in gold and green and blue, traced through with embroidery of red sandstone and green serpentine and purple slate, studded with white jewels of farm, cottage, tower. Where once only crow-cracked wind broke the silence came the chatter of fountains, peal of bells, bleating of sheep, call of ploughmen to cattle.

Bilbo turned his head from side to side, round-eyed with wonder, as he rode towards the Gate.

In part this drabble was inspired by my trip to Mt St Helens last year with [livejournal.com profile] sgafan. I was thinking that the blast-affected areas around the mountain probably looked something like the Desolation of Smaug, and of this picture that I took there last year:
