a Sindarin mistranslation of Bilbo's that leads to great hilarity among the Rivendell Elves.
Day 14
Lost in TranslationBilbo finally faltered in his recitation when the smiles and whispers among his audience grew to the point where he could no longer ignore them.
He glared at the assembled Elves and said stiffly. "My good Elves, please do share the joke. If I am to provide such hilarity, I would know the cause, that I may oblige you in future."
Lindir stepped forward and bowed. "Your pardon, Bilbo. It's just...," he hesitated, "Lúthien's
stinking hair?"
Bilbo drew himself up to his full height. "That is what the Lay says...."
"I think," Lindir answered gently, "you'll find it's
flowing hair...."

The Lost Road and Other Writings, HoME Vol 5, Part 3,
The Etymologies,
ûl is translated as odour and
ulu- as pour or flow.... Perhaps a slightly inexperienced scholar might muddle them. *g*
