Daily drabble challenge - Day 17 - Sharers of a secret hope

Day 17: rakshathedemon asked for AU - what if Denethor's firstborn had been female, and Faramir the only son (I know, a lot for a drabble). It was a lot to ask for in a drabble *g* but I had fun thinking about scenarios at a very broad level, and I hope I managed to get enough hints in here as to how I see the change affecting politics and events.

Sharers of a secret hope

"Father thanks you for the letters." Faramir inclined his head towards his sister. "It heartens us to have such... intelligence of our kinfolk here. Though we grieve to hear snakes have become so troublesome."

Míriel glanced towards Théodred and her son, heads bent over a sword-hilt. "Aye. I fear my husband will feel the adder's bite in the midst of battle, or my son when soon he comes of age to sleep among the housecarls. Already my daughter shares her cousin's bed, that vipers dare not approach." She grimaced. "But come, what of this errand of yours to the North...?"

I love the way you have created a whole AU in such a short piece. Now I'm wondering if this Faramir will survive the quest!

Now, that is a most interesting possibility, as we see the oblique references to Grima and his proclivities. MOST enlightening! And Faramir heads for Rivendell himself....

Wow! You really managed to pack it in, but still so naturally. Great reptillian references to Grima. And what amazing political and personal possibilities arise! A Rohan-Gondor link paralleling the Faramir-Eowyn one but years earlier, an heir to Theodred alive, Faramir's quest north instead of Boromir (who would capture Frodo and Sam in Ithilien?) - and would it even be the same Faramir, now his Father's favorite? Or would Denethor/Faramir still have the same dynamics?

Very cool! I wish there was a whole long AU going off on this premise! Great start to it.

How did I miss this?

Lovely drabble; and the way you seem to effortlessly cram an entire AU into 100 words is brilliant. Faramir's older sister marrying Theodred changes everything, since she gives him a son who will doubtless be Theoden's heir, rather than Eomer, if Theodred perishes in this AU. And Denethor sending Faramir to Imladris; of course he would. I would love to see more of this....
