Since I'm off to Wimbledon to watch tennis "today", you're getting this very, very, very early Monday morning....
Day 21:
scribblesinink suggested since you're going to watch tennis...something about the M-E equivalent. Somehow, tennis didn't quite work (although maybe after a day watching, I'll be inspired), but it's been kind of hard around these parts to ignore that there's some kind of World Cup thingy going on. So I suspect that's where this came from....
The Shire Cup
At first, families from Tuckborough and Woodhall simply gathered each Overlithe in a hollow in the Green Hills to make merry, and tweens from the villages played a rough ball game.
Over the years, news of the game spread. Teams from elsewhere—Hobbiton and Stock and Tighfield and Nobottle—came to try their luck. After too many bloody noses and broken heads, rules were made.
One year, the Frogmorton lads came in matching coloured shirts; four years later, all were suitably attired, supporters too. The Ground was fenced and carefully tended between tournaments; seating built; a trophy fashioned, presented by the Thain....
