So, I decided to stop procrastinating and start the Tolkien drabble-a-day thingy.

Day 1

[livejournal.com profile] mooncross gave me the prompt how many words would the Rohirrim have for 'horse'? This possibly also fulfils [livejournal.com profile] gwynnyd's request for Aragorn drabbles from each year of his life.

Horse with no name

"A colt is a young male horse," the tow-haired boy said dismissively, as if everyone knew that. "And a filly is a young female horse. They're not stallions or geldings or mares until they're four years old. And they're foals until they're weaned. These," he pointed into the paddock to their left, "will be trained as chargers and destriers, while those," he pointed to the right, "will become palfreys and hacks. We don't breed nags here in the Mark. Then there's the mearas...."

Trailing along behind the king's son, Thorongil reflected that it was all so much simpler in Sindarin.

(Note: AFAICT, Tolkien only gave us one word in Sindarin for horse (roch). [livejournal.com profile] elena_tiriel and I theorised that maybe the Elves (and Numenoreans), not being great horse breeders like the Eorlingas, formed all the other horse-related words they needed from compounds or qualifiers of roch - so mare => "female horse", foal => "baby horse", etc. Hence Aragorn finding all the specialised terminology amongst the Rohirrim rather confusing at first....)
