Day 247: An orcling in the works

sgafan, this is the "missing" drabble in the sequence that starts with A thin line between love and hate. This comes after Stepping Up and before For Services Rendered.
Day 247
as part of the Supporting Acts series.
An orcling in the works
The young man methodically tested the catapults. The wood was sound – no sign of splitting – and the well-greased mechanisms moved smoothly. Stepping back, he gestured to the arbalesters to prepare a weapon for firing.
He watched closely as they slipped a bolt into place, wound the ratchet, and released the trigger. The bolt lurched forwards, ungainly, without the expected power or range.
Arming the device himself, he found the coiled cords propelling the bolt forwards – a new blend of fibres devised by his master – were both slack and oddly heavy.
He looked up at the drizzling sky and smiled grimly.
