So, [livejournal.com profile] phyloxena had a prompt from The Children of Hurin. She wanted to know why Turin grew to dislike Doriath so.

Day 100

Bonfire of the Vanities

These fine elven-lords sit at ease in their guarded halls. Eating their fill, drinking rare vintages, singing songs that do not look beyond the fences protecting their illusions.

Outside these sheltered groves, thralls starve, thirst, hear no music but the rhythm-chants of slaves and the crack of whips.

These things trouble not my elven friends. The suffering of others is naught to them, though they tell themselves they play a part in the battle against the Dark, according to the wisdom of their King.

Short are my years. I will not let them slip by in bond to others' vanities.

"Short are my years", indeed. I think it answers the question. Accusing elves for not protecting men is not particularly fair of him, but perfectly fitting.

Wonderful and descriptive contrast between the situations of the Elves and Men. I agree, Turin's not being fair, and he is benefiting from the protection and luxury himself. (It's not as if he selflessly sets out to change the world, after all, instead fleeing after killing Saeros...) BUT, I think you nailed his character's response to it all.
