Day 300: Vigilance

Looking for inspiration on day 300, I checked out the 300th entries in each category over at the HASA Resource Library and hit upon the story of The Drûg Stone Carver. Reading about the Drúedain inspired this.

Vigilance

The small band of swarthy men, their voices harsh, passed up the winding trail.

"Look at these!" One slapped a hand on a figure squatting cross-legged beside the path. "Ugly so-and-sos, ain’t they?"

"Look like them boogeymen out o’ kids stories." Another dark-haired man peered into the figure’s face, and then spat. "Say they used ter skulk in the ’ills an’ steal babies."

"Well, we ain’t no babies," the first growled, fingering the edge of his knife.

The men passed on. Behind them, the group of figures unfolded from their still, silent vigil and crept after, poisoned arrows to hand.
