Air Pressure

The burden had come with the grief, and he had not known where one ended and the other began. He must have learned to bear the burden unnoticed, even as he grieved, and had not understood how it oppressed him.

Yet he knew it was gone in the very hour it left him: like the moment when a thunderstorm that has borne down all day on the valley breaks, and everything sighs with relief.

Feeling a little like a feather that might float away in the wind, Elrond grasped Glorfindel's shoulder, anchoring himself down, and laughed. "The Quest is achieved!"

Excellent descriptions, and I loved the opening: "The burden had come with the grief..." It sets the stage perfectly for his reaction. Wonderful comparison to the thunderstorm.

Thanks, Denise. It must have been tough on Elrond to have to deal with inheriting a ring of power on top of Gil-galad dying. I can see the two things being very muddled together in his understanding.

And I'm glad you liked the comparison to the thunderstorm - I was trying to characterize the loss of power in each ring in terms of the ring's own element.
