Day 179: Great Expectations

gwynnyd asked for a follow up to yesterday's drabble: Arwen's thoughts as she approaches Minas Tirith.

Great Expectations

"We could still turn back."

"Grandfather could order Hirvegil to save you."

"Glorfindel here could sacrifice himself once more for Turgon's House."

My brothers' jests conceal approval: each has confided privately that the snot-nosed Man-child has become a lord worthy of the thrones of Arnor and Gondor – and their sister's hand.

Beside me, father manages a half-smile. I grieve my choice does not gain him a son – long ere I met Estel, father loved and honoured him so – but loses him a daughter. Yet my gaze is again and again drawn back to the white walls that loom ever closer.

Oh, I am so flattered! And Hirvegil is grinning like a Cheshire Cat... *Hirvegil whispers in my ear:* I mean, a Sindarin Cheshire Cat..........

I love how Elladan and Elrohir gently tease their sister, and their tacit approval for the snot-nosed kid.... :-D

And Arwen clearly loves her brothers and her father... but is looking forward to her life with Estel.

(And Glorfindel is relieved that he doesn't have to wrestle another Balrog.... though, if asked, he would, for Arwen's sake....)

I love the twins' teasing in this. It's so sad that Elrond really is literally losing a daughter over this.

Glad you liked the twins' teasing - I think that's their way of coping with the "loss". And yes, sad Elrond is losing a daughter. Pesky Tolkien, setting it up like that!

I love that Arwen is drawn to M.T., even as she copes with father and brothers. Now I'm curious about this Hirvegil fellow, and I think my favorite jibe is: "Glorfindel here could sacrifice himself once more for Turgon's House."

Yes, I'm sure Arwen could put up with a lot (especially with Elladan and Elrohir being silly) in the knowledge she and Aragorn would soon be together at last.

Glad you like the Glorfindel jibe (I kinda stole that idea from elena_tiriel - and if you haven't read her Fell and Fair drabble series, I highly recommend it, and not just for finding out about Hirvegil.
