Day 207: Mother to Daughter

gwynnyd asked for Arwen and Gilraen talking about Aragorn, before and after betrothal. This is "after".

Day 207

Mother to Daughter

"You spoke truly when you said your son was stubborn!"

Gilraen glanced sharply at Arwen. "I trust you do not take him for pity or weariness."

"Nay." Arwen's giggle was uncharacteristically girlish. "He is wise, valiant, kind, honourable...." Her lips twitched. "Stubborn. He is... perfection! I wonder you judge any woman fit to wed him."

Gilraen smiled at Arwen's giddiness, recalling her own betrothal. "But then I would have no grandchildren to gladden my heart."

Arwen's face fell. "Father sets conditions. Your arms may be empty awhile yet. Can you forgive me?"

"For giving hope to Estel?" Gilraen smiled. "Surely."

Yes :( Although I'm sure she was glad to have Arwen as a daughter-in-law. (Especially if Aragorn was showing no signs of producing any grandchildren with anyone else....)

I somehow cannot imagine them talking at all. As if no another mortal saw Arwen between her first meeting with Aragorn and their wedding. But I liked this drabble anyway.

ROTFL - well I have trouble imagining Arwen sequestered away from all mortal contact altogether for 70 years... But I'm glad you liked the drabble anyway! {{{hugs}}}

As my own mother once said rather plaintively "One does expect grandchildren as one gets older...." I'm sure if you have a motherly instinct, you have a grandmotherly one, too.

Thanks, Linda. I can definitely see Gilraen still being pleased that Aragorn and Arwen are betrothed, despite the unlikeliness of any grandchildren any time soon.

Lol! I like Arwen's giddy behavior, and yes, I'm sad that Gilraen never saw Aragorn's line continued. But I love the last line: that says it all. She would be happy for the two of them, despite the conditions.

(Although Gwynnyd's theory about Gilraen's departure a couple of drabbles ago was very intriguing...)

Glad Arwen's giddiness at being in love came over, and the you appreciated the generosity of spirit I have to Gilraen.

And I have to agree that Gwynnyd's theory about Gilraen's departure was quite fascinating and fits in very well with the brief mentions of it in canon.

*sigh* So many things one would love to be able to ask JRRT....
