Day 243: Creating A Diversion

After yesterday's Misspent Youth, I couldn't help writing about how Denethor and Húrin stole the Tower Guard standard....
Day 243
as part of the Things as they were in all the days of my life series.
Creating A Diversion
Each evening at closing hour, the standard of the Guard of the Citadel was struck, to be broken out again at cockcrow. Betweentimes, it lay furled in the Captain's quarters.
This evening, the Guard standing watch outside headquarters saluted his departing Captain, who was to dine with the Steward. Soon after, a junior officer from the regulars approached on an errand from his commander.
Unnoticed, another figure slipped past into headquarters, emerging a few minutes later a little plumper around the waist.
***
Next morning, admidst the uproar, the Captain noticed a second standard – flying upside down! – outside the Rangers' barracks....
Note: One day... eventually... when my muse and my free time coincide... *sigh* ... there will be a story about Faramir's escapade alluded to in Sins of the Father. This involves him carrying on the tradition of stealing the Tower Guard standard started - unbeknownst to him (and to me, until I wrote these two drabbles!) - by his father....
