Day 34: Pest Control
May. 20th, 2007 10:03 pmFor some reason
gwynnyd's prompts seem to be speaking to me at the moment. I promise I will get back to doing prompts from other people soon!
Anyway,
gwynnyd asked for An Entwife chasing off the first orc to come to her garden.
Day 34

Pest Control
Fimbrethil woke. Stars glinted through the leaves of the cherry trees that wove their branches above her head.
She sniffed sharply. Beyond the scent of fruit-blossom was a bitter stink. Like the sweat of Men as they toiled in her fields learning the secrets of sowing and tending and reaping. But with a sour note.
Harsh voices came from the garth to the East. Moving cautiously towards them, she saw dim shapes amongst the fruit canes: trampling and slashing.
With a roar, she strode out. The Orcs scattered, but she caught enough to fertilize her corn with blood and bonemeal.
***
'Then when the Darkness came in the North, the Entwives crossed the Great River, and made new gardens, and tilled new fields, and we saw them more seldom. After the Darkness was overthrown the land of the Entwives blossomed richly, and their fields were full of corn. Many men learned the crafts of the Entwives and honoured them greatly; but we were only a legend to them, a secret in the heart of the forest. Yet here we still are, while all the gardens of the Entwives are wasted: Men call them the Brown Lands now.'
