A couple of drabbles

The first offers an explanation for why Carson has a St Andrew's Cross rather than a Union Flag on his shoulder patch, which has bothered me ever since I first saw Rising. Not that I object to Scots using their national identity, but it's just not what official kit would be like.

As Beckett pushed the last of the equipment trolleys into place, Grodin did a double take.
"Where did you get that?" he hissed, pointing to the blue and white saltire on Beckett's jacket. He instinctively glanced down to check the Union Flag on his own shoulder hadn't mutated into something else.
"Shhh." Beckett looked around nervously. "My mum gave it to me. Insisted I wear it." He rolled his eyes. "Said she wasn't sending me off on an international expedition with no Sassenach flag on my shoulder."
Grodin shook his head disbelievingly. "Bloody nationalists." He muttered. "Just what we need."

And this is a drabble written to thank
paranoidangel42 for thinking of me and getting me a souvenir from the Pegasus One con. She wanted "something about Sheppard and women". Such a difficult topic.... ;-)
Oblivious
"We're ready for the test, Major."
John glanced up from his study of the instruments and smiled. "Thank you, Doctor."
The red-haired physicist tilted her head sideways and gave a little giggle.
Why do they do that? John wondered as he ran his hands over the flight controls and directed the puddlejumper upwards.
He knew every member of the Atlantis expedition had been carefully chosen for his or her expertise; he was working with the brightest and best.
Maybe all female scientists are simpering idiots.
John made a mental note to ask McKay later if he'd noticed the same thing.

Date: 2006-02-22 11:01 am (UTC)But it just struck me as so utterly non-standard issue for something official like this, where he would surely have a Union Flag. (I mean, Scotland has devolution and it's own football team, but still part of the UK for most international purposes....)
Of such niggles are plotbunnies made....
Re: Carson drabble
Date: 2006-02-22 09:51 pm (UTC)That is true. But I didn't notice his flag was Scottish and not British until it was pointed out to me. And when someone asked one of the guests about it at Pegasus One I couldn't work out what they were asking at first!
