Day 32
Cold comfort
The river-mist cold had stolen into his bones. Even where his shoulders pressed tightly against the men either side, there was no warmth.
He did not know their names: here it was best to forget name, home, kin – and to what end they rowed. The only thing to remember was how to avoid the sting of the lash, ever-ready in the master's hand.
Hunched over his manacled wrists, he dozed fitfully. The chill increased. Suddenly screams, splashes, leaping flame woke him. He saw pale figures wielding ghostly weapons.
Numbed beyond fear, he grinned mirthlessly at the torment of his tormentors.

This didn't come out Tolkien enough to be a Tolkien drabble-a-day drabble, but I thought people might like to see it.
Trading Places
Sometimes, re-reading Lord of the Rings under the bedcovers by torchlight, Sam wished he was Boromir. The one who got to go hunting orcs and then come home and boss his baby brother around. Dad's favorite.
Sure, Boromir was brought low by the ring, but who wanted to be a goody-goody like Faramir? Or – the thirteen-year-old Sam recoiled – get the girl or all that boring responsibility as Steward.
As he grew older, he came round to the idea that maybe being Faramir was cool after all. And then the movies came out – and Boromir not Faramir got all the attention....

Can you do LotR/HP crossover?

"Supernatural" is a TV show involving a couple of brothers investigating spooky stuff. (OK, that's a very poor summary, but I hope you get the idea!)
Sam has an older brother, so Sam = Faramir. But I'm glad you thought it worked just as a reflection of a modern boy reading LotR even without knowing about Supernatural.
Can you do LotR/HP crossover?
Hmm, possibly.... I am an HP fan too. Any particular suggestions?

I guess you have an idea who are my favorite characters.

Cartographer's Craft produced a great image of Wisley twins grimly and scientifically dissecting Dementors. CC is a fantastic version of year 7; for one thing it's Harry/Sirius I could buy, and I generally don't like slash, esp. between major and favorite characters.
Actually, Wisley twins general attitude towards Harry (in this fic) is very much the same some ficwriters attribute to Perehdrel twins towords Estel.
I'm so glad you consider these prompts
Date: 2007-05-22 07:56 pm (UTC)Faramir stretched and startled. On the other side of his table sat,
haunched over a large tome, a young girl in dark robes. She didn't
look a noble's daughter, nor a maidservant, and any girl had no
business in this distant corner of Minas Tirith library. She could be
dream, he thought. A vision. As a girl looked up, he saw a kindred
spirit, a naive quest for knowledge. As if it ever helps, he thought
bitterly. "I would that I had foresight of my ancestors", he
whispered.
The girl looked calculatingly, just like Mithrandir before giving his
partial answers. "Gondor will stand", she said, "and you will marry for
love".

Hermione stretched and startled. Her table suddenly extended beyond
the window in some unfamiliar room, and that new half of it was
scattered with scrolls and volumes stamped with stylized tree. She
squinted at vaguely familiar rounded runes. Looking up from the
table, she saw a young man staring at her with same surprise she felt.
She took in his dark hair, sharp, pale handsome face, haughty and
intelligent and haunted expression, reminding her of Sirius. Haughty
enough to remind of Malfoy, she thought, suddenly annoyed. The guy
looked so pureblood she wanted to heck him on the spot. Suddenly she
realized there she saw these runes: in that book about lost kings and
small hairy-footed heroes. Upside-down letters he just written down
formed "Osgiliath". This must be, she raked her memory, Faramir of
Gondor. The only guy in that book she really liked.
Hermione thought hard. She wanted to comfort brave captain, not
create another paradox. "Gondor will stand", she said, "and you
will marry for love".

Date: 2007-05-23 10:36 pm (UTC)Oh wow, I am honoured that in some small way I have been responsible for inspiring to post your first public ficlet!
And I really like this - what a very nice moment between the two of them, and a great way to work them in together. I especially like Haughty enough to remind of Malfoy - that's a comparison I wouldn't have thought of, but it's very apt.
I hope you will keep on writing (and posting) ficlets!
